Our culture is crowded—crowded with messages, images, and just plain stuff that would love to fill in every place of our hearts and minds. When it all becomes overwhelming, there’s a natural desire for us to simplify. The last words of 1 John say, “Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts,” (1 John 5:21). He’s showing us that in a world of “many” we can simply look at the One and allow only Him to fill our hearts. Let’s unpack how to get back to these basics.
